Synopsis
“Maintenance” is an experimental animated short film that follows a solitary astronaut’s increasingly fractured reality between piloting a deteriorating spaceship and surviving on a desolate planet. The boundaries between pilot, ship, and environment blur through metamorphic sequences.
The film’s visual language employs metamorphosis to move between scene elements, blending organic and mechanical forms. The non-linear narrative structure deliberately confounds causality – observer and observed, maintainer and maintained, are ultimately inseparable.
Technique
The project combines 3D animation with performance capture and real-time rendering technology and uses guided artist-in-the-loop generative AI techniques to achieve fluid transformations and dynamic environments.
The project serves as both a creative work and a research platform for investigating new paradigms in experimental animation.
